...Editor Says with Sandie Laming-Powell
A reality check!
A week away from Paper Towers and I am kerknackered! I have spent 24/7 with my grandchildren, Ruby and Roman and the pair have worn me out. And I’ve got the scars to prove it.
Like every good Nonna, I made sure my precious twosome were smothered with suncream and dutifully applied more every half an hour. I went through one whole bottle in a day as there was no way they were going to burn.
They had a ball, made friends with other children and it was very difficult to drag them away for some tea. When I finally managed it and took them to the apartment, yours truly was in for quite a shock.
Oh yes, the kids were fine, not a sign of sunburn anywhere. But, there was one thing I’d forgotten to do…put lotion on myself.
One side of me was burned to a crisp. I was bright, bright red and as the evening wore on, the pain kicked in. It was amusing for the children, in fact they couldn’t stop laughing, but it wasn’t so funny for me. I felt a complete idiot.
For two days I had to cover myself up and must have looked even sillier but it was a lesson learned.
Anyway, last Saturday I took them to Los Cristianos and I would suggest if you have small children, to do the same.
Firstly, we lunched in El Cine. This is a restaurant quite literally up an alley, within short walking distance from the Harbour car park. Most times you have to queue but believe me the wait is worthwhile.
Five of us tucked into spicy chicken wings, two enormous plates of salad, bread, a couple of glasses of vino, two beers and obviously soft drinks and the bill was just 30 euros.
Fully replete, we then headed for the beach. So much work has been done in this area and it looks magnificent. You can hire sunbeds and parasols if you so wish, but my kids prefer to be close to the sea – and that costs nothing.
In the evening, they had another treat in store for them. I was invited to the opening of The Theatre, now under new management, (situated in Garden City) and what a brilliant night we all had. A gorgeous buffet was laid on and Tenerife’s finest cabaret artistes performed. Ruby and Roman were in heaven singing along with all the stars. (Read Suzy Q’s article on page 35).
The owner Dennis told me they are planning big events in the coming weeks and obviously The Paper will keep you all informed of what’s happening. In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone concerned, especially Cy Benson (who organised all the acts) for giving my family a night not to be forgotten.
