New look planned for major commercial zones

Following a recent meeting between the Fuerteventura Cabildo and the Canarian Government an agreement has been reached for the proposed improvements to the commercial zones of Puerto del Rosario, Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal and Corralejo.
The plan has made concrete the various measures involved in the renovation, due to take place over a four-year period from 2009 to 2013, with the ongoing project at Gran Tarajal expected to complete in 2009.
The next initiative will be in Puerto del Rosario, expected to kick off towards the end of 2009. This first phase in the town will involve improvements to ten streets that cross the avenidas Juan de Bethencourt and Virgen de La Peña.
Cabildo President Mario Cabrera, Cabildo Business Councillor Candelaria Umpiérrez, Canarian Government Director General of Commerce, Arturo Cabrera, all agreed that the main priorities are to be the renovation of the open air commercial zone in Morro Jable and the second phase of the Puerto del Rosario project, which centres on the reformation of the calle Leon y Castillo.
Work in Morro Jable will be completed in just one phase and includes the renovation of the areas incorporated in the calles Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Senador Velázquez Cabrera and the pedestrian calle Tofio.
Candelaria Umpiérrez said, “The work in Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable will be the first to get underway. We hope to reach an agreement on financing soon and give the green light to move forward within the next two months”.
Current cost estimates are in the four-million euro range, and the Cabildo is expected to pay 50 per cent.
Towards the bottom of the list of priorities is the third Puerto del Rosario phase, focusing on the calle Virgen de La Pena, improvements in Betancuria and the commercial zone in Correlejo.
The projects aim to provide assistance to businesses involved in traditional commercial enterprises, rather than mega-stores. The authorities want to help these smaller businesses become more competitive and attractive to consumers and reactivate local commerce.
