...Pet Talk with Sharon Haslam
Q I have an elderly Labrador and would like advice on how to help her feel more comfortable in her senior years. She is a healthy dog but does suffer with the usual aches and pains associated with age.
I would firstly make sure that your dog is checked regularly by a vet to ensure she is not experiencing unnecessary pain and discomfort.
Your vet should check her for arthritis, which is a common ailment in older dogs, and also check her hearing, vision and overall body condition which can deteriorate with age. Give your dog more opportunity to relieve herself as her bladder may not be as strong as it used to be and help prevent accidents within the home.
Older dogs do not need as much exercise, however it is advisable to keep them active as much as possible through gentle walks. If your dog still likes to swim or enjoys a dip in the ocean (some Labs just love that water even as they get older!), make sure you dry her off properly even when it is warm outside to help avoid more health problems.
You will also need to change your dog’s diet. How much is she being fed and is she on a good quality senior food? Is she still able to chew her food properly? Grooming is still very important as old coats can become easily matted or tangled, plus it helps you to keep an eye out for any new lumps and bumps that may appear.
It is also advisable to raise both her food and water bowls off the floor slightly to aid with digestion; you can actually buy specialized feeding stands via the internet.
I would also suggest raising your dog’s bed slightly off the floor as this will make it a little easier for her to lie down and get up, which will keep her off any cold and draughty floors. They do sell specially designed hammock style dog beds in pet stores here in Tenerife.
Finally, I always laugh when people say, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”! Of course you can. You can still have fun with your dog and teach her some new and easier tricks and, of course, this will help to keep her mind active, too.
