'What's on' guide
Friday 1st August
At 9pm every Friday until the 29 of August, in the Plaza de San Pedro of the northern municipality, El Sauzal, see various spectacles, from satirical comedy to poetry recitals. Earlier in the evening, from 5 pm, are children’s activities, including storytelling and puppet and magic shows. 6 pm boasts an exposition from the makers of dolls, musical instruments, and traditional games. A fabulous occasion in which the old and the young can share an afternoon and evening of playful activity.
Also tonight at the festival of World Music And More 2008, catch Amparanoia, Commando Macondo, Niños de los Ojos Rojos, and Jonny’s Moon. The festival takes place from 8 pm in the rear plaza behind the Auditorium in Santa Cruz.
From 10 pm, taking place in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, is the semi-final of the Festival of Candelaria, with Monica Naranjo, and Tarantula.
Saturday 2nd August
Tonight from 8pm, taking place in the back plaza behind the Auditorium in Santa Cruz at the Festival of World Music And More 2008, are the acts Cambolinga, 08001, Aristedes Moreno, and Daara J.
The final night of the Festival de Candelaria sees Rosario Flores in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias from 10pm.
AECC, The Spanish Association Against Cancer, has initiated a campaign for the prevention of skin cancer. The objective of AECC in Santa Cruz is to offer information and raise awareness about the disease, and the effects it has on sufferers and their families, by means of free services designed to provide a better quality of life.

Sunday 3rd August
During the month of August, The Theatrical Union of Tejina offers various cultural programmes including art exhibitions, theatre representations, film showings, and music concerts, among other things. This Wednesday, the 6th August, will be Cine de Autor (3rd cycle of movie shorts). It takes place at 9 pm.
Ruben Blades is in concert in Santa Cruz tonight as part of the International Festival of Salsa Music. The singer, musician, actor, lawyer, and politician, who recently turned 60, has a career spanning three decades, and presently holds the position of Minister of Tourism for Panama. The concert will take place at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz at 9 pm.
The Theatre in San Eugenio hosts Tenerife´s Got Talent every Sunday from 2 pm. The heats will run up to the 9th of November when the final takes place. Musicians and singers wishing to enter should contact Duke on 669 102 457.
Monday 4th August
The Dizzy Gillespie All Stars will today inaugurate the eighth edition of the Xàbia Jazz Festival. Its artistic director, Jorge Garcia, states that the festival is a tribute to the grand figures and movements from the history of Jazz and Bossa Nova, linking the new generation of musicians to the classics of the past, like the veteran Canadian pianist Oliver Jones, who will pay homage to his countryman, the recently Oscar Peterson.
Also featuring will be the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra, consisting of some of the finest Catalan musicians, as well as singer Ann Hampton Callaway, whose style is reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald. Another woman with a different style is the pianist and Brazilian singer Eliane Elias who will pay tribute to Bossa Nova, now on its fiftieth anniversary.
The Xabia Jazz Festival, organized by the Musical Institution of Valencia (IVM) and the local government, has been praised as exemplary in its passion and organisation of the festival, while Francesca Gil of the local council has stated that the concerts taking place on the Plaza de la Constitucion will be as big an event for the musicians as it will be for the spectators. With performances beginning at 10.30 pm, the festival lasts until the 8th August
Tuesday 5th August
The Ayuntamiento de Arona celebrates the festival ‘Summer Sunset 2008’ with acts such as The Funk Tastic Band, Africuya, and The Bing Hi Banda, taking place on the Las Galletas boulevard on the 9th August from 8 pm till midnight.
The Ayuntamiento of Guia de Isora presents the tenth edition of Arte Isora, a painting contest which Canary Island residents can enter. Each artist willing to participate will have to contribute two original and unpublished pieces, both with a free subject and technique. Wednesday 6th August
Madel and his band are currently touring, and transmitting through their music the relation between nature and the deepest human feelings. This musical spectacular showcases Madel’s unique musical style, combining modern music, intimate pop-rock, and clever use of lyrics and wordplay. On the 9th of August they visit Buenavista, then the Santo Domingo Convent in Los Silos at the end of August. They will also visit La Laguna on the 12th September at 8.30 pm at the Estación de Tranvía de La Cuesta. Next will be Santa Ursula on the 20th September at 8 pm in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, and they are set to visit the Teatro Guimera in Santa Cruz in October (although no dates are confirmed at present), before finally performing in Guia de Isora on the 29th October.
Thursday 7th August
During August, The Theatrical Union of Tejina offers various cultural programmes, including art exhibitions, theatre representations, film showings, and music concerts, amongst others. At 9pm this Saturday 9th August, is a performance by singers Óscar Hernández and Beatriz.
Wednesday 13th August at 9pm is Cine de Autor (4th cycle of movie shorts). Friday 15th August at 8pm is the presentation of prizes for the contest of poems and songs ‘Corazones de Tejina’. Tuesday 19th August at 10pm is the Fiesta of Art of the fiestas in honour of San Bartolome de Tejina.
The Festival of Jazz Novas Musicas of Monforte de Lemos. For years, Monforte de Lemos has been able to attract many fans of jazz, blues, and creative music every August through concerts, classes and jam sessions. From the 18th to the 24th August, free concerts in the faculties of the Conservatorio Profesional de Música, including Ara Malakian, Jerry Gonzalez, Joshua Edelman, Roberto Somoza Calviño, and Charlie, among others. Friday 8th August
In the Caja Canarias Cultural Space is the creation of the 20th century exhibition, consisting of 75 works carried out by important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The works include numerous artistic disciplines such as sculpture, painting, drawing, and photography that are distinguished by their look and feel. In the room of Contemporary Art, the artist Jose Otero exhibits ‘Y Sin Embargo se Mueve’. At the same time, Tragaluz Digital will be in the section dedicated to multimedia art and video creation. Also you can see Las Predicciones del Gran Chin, a short animation by Canario, Paco Guillen. This takes place until September 7th.
